Several years ago, my brother-in-law called to let us know that there was a movie out that had really made an impression on him. He urged us to watch it, telling us that it was one of the best movies he'd ever seen.
Now you have to know that Nick is a guy. He doesn't dig chick flicks. He makes fun of husbands who go to movies that their wives want to see.
He's a man. (sorta)
"This movie will change your life", he promised.
Intrigued, I wondered what movie was so powerful that it could have changed hard-headed Nick?
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
I kid you not.
In case you've never heard of it, it's a movie about a bunch of teenage girls and a pair of jeans, and most importantly...it changed Nick's life.
I'm not sure how, but he insists that it did.
Just to give him the benefit of the doubt, I watched the movie. And waited...for my life to be changed.
There was one point when I got a little teary eyed, but I stayed pretty much the same (except for gaining new ammunition against my brother-in-law).
But it made me realize that I've never seen a movie that changed my life.
I have favorite movies that I watch over and over again, but none of them changed my life in the slightest. They did make me laugh, or cry, or sometimes even both. I think that's the most I expect out of a movie. A few minutes of losing myself in another person's life.
My faves for that...
- Steel Magnolias. I. Cry. Every. Time.
- Pride and Prejudice: Colin Firth is the only man in the world that looks good in breeches.
- School of Rock: I think Jack Black may be the funniest man in the world.
- Princess Bride: Remember the pit of despair? Remember "to the pain"? Remember Fred Savage before he fell in love with Winne from The Wonder Years?
You'll notice that Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants did not make my list.
Did it make yours?

Oh my goodness! I could watch Steel Magnolias back to back for 3 weeks without sleep. Jack Black Rules!!
LOVE Steel Magnolias.
But I prefer the Matthey McFayden version of Mr. Darcy. The Colin Firth version didn't do it for me.
I also love The Devil Wears Prada. I wish I would have followed my heart and been a dancer on broadway. Too late (& chunky) now.
An there are too many, many more to list.....mostly musicals.
Hmmm...that is a good question. I guess I'd have to agree with you that movies are a fun escape but generally not life-changing.
I loved Colin Firth's P&P-that is such a great movie! School of Rock was really funny!
Thanks for participating. I just added your link to my post.
I hate Steel Magnolias for the same reason you love it. I cry, every time. (But then again, I think I'm partially justified in my hate...) Not to mention it scares my own mother half to death. I think she's only watched it once. I've never seen Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, but the name makes me laugh pretty hard! Oh and by the way, "Anybody want a peanut?" Classic.
I LOVE Princess Bride! Best. Movie. Ever. Have you seen Labyrinth??? You HAVE to watch it. It is awesome.
Some info for you!

That is hilarious! Sometimes movies make me feel gratitude for my life, but I'm not sure about actually changing my life...wait! An Inconvenient Truth did make me take the environment more seriously. Books are more likely to change my life.
Failure to Launch changed my life. It made me realize that I cannot baby any one of my three boys unless I want to live with them until they are well into their 30's! Ha ha. But I do love that movie.
Love and have always loved the movie Dead Poet's Society. It changed my perception of a lot of things, mainly because I was like 12 when I first saw it. However, I will continually watch it over and over again and never be less touched by the ending.
I love the princess bride! "You killed my father...prepare to die." Oh now I have to watch it.
Labyrinth is a great one, I agree with KD. David Bowie is fabulous...even in man tights. "The power of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power. What power? The power of voodoo. Who do? The babe with the power." Oh now I have to watch that one too. crap.
I also love love love Gone with the Wind.
This is funny! My hubby is a guy like your bro-in-law...except he would NEVER watch a movie, let alone recommend, with that name!! I think he would die first! (My hubby's opinion is that your bro-in-law is pulling your leg! )
That is too funny!
I love the Princess Bride and Pride and Prejudice as well!
And I've never seen The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, although I looked at the book one day in Barnes and Noble several years ago!
Haven't watched PB is awhile.
